3G
There are already over 2 million 3G handsets in use in Australia today, and as network technologies improve and handset penetration rates increase the wireless channel will emerge as the dominant customer contact platform. There are several reasons for this:
- third generation mobile devices will provide an Internet-type user experience in a wireless context, including maps and directions;
- location information is more relevant in a wireless context (for instance a consumer walking out of their local supermarket and wanting to know where they can use their petrol discount or other loyalty scheme offer);
- 3G devices can provide automatic handset location based on cell ID or GPS functionality. This will relieve consumers of the need to confirm their location when conducting a search or responding to a marketing message; and
- wireless devices lend themselves to user profiling. Consumers already do this with ringtones and wallpapers, and will eventually do so with other information, such as brand preferences. For example a bank customer conducting a search for an ATM, and wishing to pre-define the relevant bank in order to minimise ATM transaction fees, or a sales rep who needs to find a particular brand of service station because they have been issued with a corporate petrol card.
